Special Report: On the Ground in Iowa How two Northern Nevadans travelled to Iowa for the 2007 Ames Straw Poll, Learn about one of our biggest challenges... a story every Ron Paul supporter needs to read! We will probably face a similar situation in the Nevada Caucus on January 19, 2008...
The afternoon heat was worthy of a steam-cooker. The temperature was close to one hundred degrees, with the humidity almost as high. The sun streamed down relentlessly on Ames, Iowa as a handful Ron Paul supporters stood in the parking lot of Iowa State University to meet the buses bringing Republicans to vote in the Ames Straw Poll. The air was filled with dust and choking diesel fumes, but the Ron Paul supporters were determined. As bus after bus after bus unloaded, they tried to talk to the people coming off into the heat. Most of the buses had been chartered by the Mitt Romney campaign, and were filled with Romney supporters. These Romney supporters came at a price, of course. The Romney campaign had not only charted the air-conditioned buses, but had also paid their straw poll ticket fee, given them complimentary T-shirts, and provided golf carts to ferry them to the expansive Romney tent. Most of the Romney supporters would not take the information about Ron Paul. A few did, but most filed obediently off the buses to the waiting golf carts. Those that didn't get golf carts were greeted at the buses by Romney people carrying signs that read "Follow Me". And they did follow. The Paul supporters had a difficult time trying to talk to these people, who seemed so bent on imitating sheep. Pathetic? Yes, perhaps . . . perhaps a few other choice adjectives could be found to describe the Romney sheeple. However, they are evidence of the workings of the efficient, well-oiled, and well-funded machine that is Mitt Romney's campaign. Their organization was evident in ways beyond the buses of supporters. Since Mitt Romney is a member of the Mormon church, he has a potential support base around the country, where ever there is a Mormon installation; and Iowa is no exception. The Romney campaign tent was huge, with a massive stage out front supplemented by a gigantic TV screen to let everyone see Mitt Romney bigger and closer than any decent person could stand. Romney's campaign obviously has a lot of money - not surprising, of course, as it is kept well supplied by Romney's personal fortune. Money can buy a lot things; perhaps even straw polls. After all, the votes were being counted on Diebold machines. Apparently some of these machines malfunctioned - surprised? - and some of the votes had to be hand counted. But the Republican party assured everyone that the vote was fair and above-board. They expect us to never mind that the Diebold machines are being de-certified across the country because they can be so easily hacked and rigged; never mind that the poll was being overseen by Mary Mosiman, the Story county auditor who is also, incidentally, on Mitt Romney's "Romney for President Leadership Team." The straw poll results were delayed for over an hour as the votes from some machines were "hand-counted". A few hours later, the Republicans came out and announced that Mitt Romney had won, with over 30% of the vote. Surprised? An exit poll had been attempted, but the volunteers were harassed and intimidated, and only 6% of the voters took part in the exit poll - which, incidentally, Ron Paul won by a wide margin. This story is not exactly a shining example of democracy in action, to say the least. However, it is illustrative of the Mitt Romney Machine and their operations. We can expect these operations to continue, wherever the Romney campaign decides to sink their millions. This same machine could easily decide that Nevada is worth their time and money; in which case a very well organized, tireless, and efficient group of citizens will be needed to combat the Romney Machine. A well conducted exit poll would be extremely important in that case to help ensure honesty. If we want to be that group of well organized, tireless, efficient citizens, we need to start now. There are a few main facets of Mitt Romney's Machine that we must combat. His Machine is well-funded; they have a lot of money, and there are quite a few Mormons in Nevada. The Romney Machine will probably repeat their modus operandi, and bus in all the supporters they can. We don't want our Nevada caucus to turn into the-best-caucus-Romney's-money-can-buy. |
